More than 1,000 people, mostly young demonstrators, gathered in front of Brussels Central Station to protest planned education reforms in the French-speaking Wallonia-Brussels Federation, with clashes and unrest reported across the Belgian capital.

Protesters set fire to barricades and bicycles near Brussels Central Station, while unrest was also reported at Saint-Guidon Station in Anderlecht.

The protests against the government’s education reforms in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation caused disruptions to metro services and prompted police intervention, according to Brussels Times.

Belgian police have so far not released information on arrests or injuries, the outlet reports.

The Government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, which is responsible for French-language education in the country, is among other measures planning to increase annual tuition fees for higher education from €835 to around €1,100.
