The regional government of Spain’s Canary Islands opposes allowing a luxury cruise ship, on which an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus has occurred, to dock in the archipelago, said its leader Fernando Clavijo.

“This decision is not based on any technical criteria, nor is there enough information that would reassure the public or guarantee their safety,” Clavijo told radio station COPE.

He added that he had requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to discuss the issue, Reuters reports.

Earlier on Wednesday, Spain’s public broadcaster TVE reported that the cruise ship was expected to dock on the Canary Island of Tenerife, citing sources from the Ministry of Health.

For context, an outbreak of hantavirus infection was reported on the cruise ship MV Hondius, which was traveling from Argentina to the Cape Verde Islands.

Three people have died, and the exact number of infected passengers is still unknown.

Hantavirus is transmitted by rodents, and it is most commonly spread to humans by inhaling particles from dried rodent droppings.

Infections usually occur when the virus becomes airborne from rodent urine, feces, or saliva, according to information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
