Germany has come to Spain's defense
Spain’s membership in NATO is not in question, a German government spokesperson said, after media indicated that an internal email suggested Pentagon considered the possibility of suspending Spain from alliance due to disagreements over operations against Iran
“Spain is a member of NATO, and I see no reason why that should change,” a German government spokesperson said at a press conference in Berlin, Reuters reported.
According to U.S. sources cited by Reuters, an internal Pentagon document examined options for pressuring NATO allies that did not support American operations in the war with Iran, including the possibility of suspending Spain and reviewing certain diplomatic positions.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that Spain is a “loyal partner” of NATO and fully meets its obligations.
Upon arriving at an informal summit of European leaders in Nicosia, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that Spain does not act on the basis of internal emails, but exclusively on official documents and the positions of the U.S. government, stressing that Madrid operates in accordance with international law.
