Serious accident on a famous mountain: Cable car crashes into barriers; 100 people trapped PHOTO/VIDEO

According to initial information, none of those injured in the cable car accident are in life-threatening condition.

The ski slopes were immediately closed, and the operation of the cable car was suspended.

The cabin did not slow down in time

The incident occurred in the morning, when the cabin, for as yet undetermined technical reasons, failed to slow down sufficiently upon entering the upper station.

Firefighters and emergency services responded at the scene.

The injured — one cable car employee and three passengers from the cabin — were treated at the scene thanks to a doctor and a nurse who happened to be nearby, and were later transported to hospital by helicopter.

'The cabin did not slow down and hit the protective barriers', statements from the scene said.

Passenger evacuation underway

The director of the company operating the cable car stated that there were around 15 passengers in the ascending cabin, and that one person suffered an arm injury, while the others escaped with minor scrapes.”

The biggest challenge currently is the evacuation of around 94 passengers who remain trapped at the lower station in Italy. They are uninjured, but for safety reasons must be evacuated, which is being carried out with the help of helicopters and fire crews.

Authorities estimate that the entire operation could be completed within the next few hours.

Cable car renovated two years ago

The cable car, built in 1962, underwent a major renovation at the beginning of 2023. During the works, the motors, cables, pulleys, and cabins were replaced, with the total investment amounting to around two million euros, supported significantly by regional and local authorities.

The cause of the accident will be the subject of a detailed investigation.
