Orbán was not promised a "shield" from Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he did not offer financial aid to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, thereby refuting claims by a senior Budapest official who had announced a “financial shield” from Washington.

“No, I did not promise him that, but he certainly asked,” Trump said in an interview with Politico.

When asked whether Budapest could receive a aid package, Trump avoided a direct answer and praised Orbán for “excellent immigration management,” noting that “he doesn’t let anyone into his country.”

He also said that he wants to lead the U.S., not Europe, and added that he has supported leaders whom many Europeans do not like, including Orbán.

After his visit to the White House last month, Orbán told Hungarian media that he had “agreed on the possibility of financial aid in case of difficulties” with Trump.

Trump has previously intervened through the U.S. Treasury in similar situations, including approving an aid package for Argentina before parliamentary elections.
