Lavrov exposed the real truth: Here's why Trump is avoiding a meeting with Putin
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the reasons why the announced meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not take place.
According to Lavrov, U.S. President Donald Trump received "secret reports" that prompted him to cancel the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest.
"Where and from whom these behind-the-scenes reports reached the American leader, leading him to either postpone or cancel the Budapest summit, is unknown. But I have presented an overview of events solely based on the facts for which I am responsible. I have no intention of responding to the obvious lies about Russia's 'unwillingness to negotiate' or 'cancellation of the summit in Anchorage,'" Lavrov stated.
He added that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had agreed to a face-to-face meeting during a phone call in mid-October, with Budapest chosen as the location.
The talks fell through a few days later when Trump announced that he did not want to "waste time" and therefore would not attend the meeting with the Russian president.
"We remain ready to hold a second Russia–U.S. summit in Budapest if it indeed builds on the consolidated results from Alaska. However, the date has not been set. Russia–U.S. contacts continue," Lavrov added.
