The search for the killer is still ongoing, after the man who was initially arrested on the campus where the killing took place was released after police questioning.

"Our investigation is ongoing and we will continue to release information in the interest of transparency," FBI Director Cash Patel said in a post on X.

At the same time, the Utah Department of Public Safety announced that both people taken into custody in this case have been released because they are "not connected to the shooting" of Kirk.

One of these people was charged with obstructing university police, as previously announced during a press conference, but the Department did not say why these people were initially suspected of killing an ally of US President Donald Trump, reports CNN.

"The investigation and search for the shooter is ongoing," the Department's announcement states.

Trump: Dark moment for the United States

In a video message posted on X, US President Donald Trump said he was "filled with grief and anger over the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk".

"Charlie inspired millions and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror. Charlie was a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate and the country that he loved so much, the United States of America", Trump said.

"He is a model for truth and freedom and there's never been anyone who was so respected by youth. Charlie was also a man of deep, deep faith. And we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace with God in heaven," Trump said, adding that he asked God to protect Kirk's wife and children "in this terrible hour of anger and pain. This is a dark moment for America," he added.

He announced that his administration would "find every one of those who contributed to this crime and other political violence." Trump noted that "radical left-wing political violence has hurt too many innocent people."

The FBI, which is working with local and state law enforcement in Utah to investigate Charlie Kirk's murder, urged anyone with "information, photos and video" of the killing to share the files through an online form.
