The attacks came hours after US President Donald Trump said the leaders of both countries had agreed to work on a ceasefire, Reuters reports.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense announced that Thailand shelled the temple complexes this morning, and launched ground attacks at several points.

The Thai military said that early this morning, Cambodia opened fire on several areas, including near civilian homes.

US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he had spoken with the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, and that they had agreed to meet immediately to quickly agree a ceasefire and end the fighting.

Four days after the worst fighting in more than a decade broke out between the Southeast Asian neighbors, more than 30 people have been killed and more than 130,000 people have been evacuated from border areas in the two countries.

Thailand and Cambodia also blamed each other for starting the conflict in the early hours of Thursday, July 24, in the disputed border area, which quickly escalated from small arms fire to heavy shelling at at least six locations along the 209-kilometer border, where in some parts the two countries' sovereignty has been contested for more than a century.

The clash erupted just hours after Thailand pulled its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelled a Cambodian envoy the night before, in response to a Thai soldier being seriously injured by a landmine that Bangkok says was recently planted by Cambodian troops, a charge Cambodia has denied.
