A large number of firefighters are on the ground trying to bring the fire under control, Sabah announced.

In extinguishing fires, intervention is carried out from the air and from land.

The fire broke out in a forest near Izmir around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, but due to strong winds that reached 110 kilometers per hour, it spread rapidly.

The helicopters were initially unable to take off due to unfavorable weather conditions.

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Turkey, İbrahim Yumaklı, came to Izmir yesterday and carried out an inspection.

"We continued to fight the fire with four airplanes, 14 helicopters, 106 tankers, construction equipment that I can count in hundreds and vehicles of coastal institutions," Yumaklı said, adding that firefighters are currently fighting the flames at eight points.

Houses burned down

Yumaklı pointed out that many houses were burned and became unusable for living, and that the state will help the citizens affected by the fire.

"There is no difference between burning the forest and firing a bullet at the homeland," Yumaklı said.

He stated that since the beginning of June, 468 forest fires broke out due to carelessness and pointed out that this can be characterized as a crime, because forests are, as he said, "the future of the country".

According to the data, in just one month, firefighters extinguished 1,459 fires in Turkey, of which 569 were in the forest, and 890 in the urban area.

"It was determined that 258 fires were caused by burning stubble, 126 by cigarette butts, 34 by fires from picnics, 26 by garbage, 20 fires started when material that should have been thrown away caught fire, and four by fireworks," Yumaklı said.

More than 50,000 people were evacuated

In Turkey, in the last few days, more than 50 thousand citizens were evacuated due to fires in the vicinity of Izmir, Bilecik and Hatay, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced.

"According to the initial information, 64 residential buildings, three business buildings and 20 barns were damaged in Bilecik. In Izmir, 132 residential buildings and one business building were damaged," Yerlikaya wrote on social networks.

In a fire that broke out in a forest area in the Tarakli district of Sakarya and spread to the village of Bilecik over the weekend, 13 houses burned to the ground.
