Speaking at a conference on energy transition in Athens, Mitsotakis said that Greece "needs to be ready to join the nuclear alliance."

"This may come as a shock to some of those listening to us, given that Greece is a country with no background or experience in nuclear energy. But when I look at the overall development of the energy sector, I don’t see a way for the world to reach carbon neutrality without nuclear energy, and I see very interesting developments in nuclear energy technology," he said.

Mitsotakis noted that he does not believe this will happen soon, but he wants Greece "to be part of the conversation" about the use of nuclear energy, according to Kathimerini.

At the same time, Mitsotakis expressed concern over the escalating war between Israel and Iran, saying that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons, while emphasizing that a solution can only be reached through diplomatic means.

He pointed out that the situation in Gaza remains deeply troubling and stressed that the global focus should not be limited solely to Israel and Iran.

"The fact that we now have this conflict between Israel and Iran should not discourage us from constantly emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and for unrestricted access to significant humanitarian aid that will address the immediate needs of the people of Gaza", he said.

Mitsotakis also stated that Greece will not participate in a potential NATO mission in the Middle East, emphasizing that Athens is not involved in that conflict, which he said has no military solution.

"We must ensure the protection of our citizens in the wider region. We successfully organized the evacuation of some Greek citizens from Israel. These are complex operations. I hope we won’t have to conduct more of them", he added.
