Trump: This will be his last day
U.S. President Donald Trump today praised billionaire Elon Musk, whose term in his administration ends today at 1:30 p.m. local time, and announced that he will hold a joint press conference with him.
"This will be his last day, but not really, because he will always be with us, helping us in every way. Elon is great," Trump said in a post on the Truth Social social network, Reuters reported.
Musk announced on Wednesday that he is stepping down from his White House post as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, which is tasked with cutting federal spending, giving Tesla, which he owns, some relief to investors after the company's shares fell this year, in part due to backlash over his support for Trump and right-wing parties in Europe.
In addition, he recently pledged to spend less money on politics, after spending nearly $300 million on Trump's presidential campaign last year, as well as other Republican candidates.
Musk previously announced that the Department of Government Efficiency would continue to work within the government and said he believed its mission would "only get stronger over time."
Musk's decision came a day after he said he was ''disappointed'' in the spending bill passed by House Republicans last week, which was supported by Trump.
