Myanmar declared a week of mourning after the earthquake

Myanmar's ruling military junta today declared a week of mourning for the powerful earthquake that recently struck the region, killing at least 2,700 people, leaving nearly 300 missing and injuring nearly 4,000.

The minute of silence will begin at 12:51 p.m. local time, exactly when the earthquake occurred on Friday, reports the BBC.

Aid has flowed into Myanmar from around the world, including teams from Russia, China and the United States, but rescue groups are warning of disease outbreaks, while poor infrastructure and a lots of civil conflicts are seriously hampering relief efforts.

Latest data: 2,719 dead

The death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar has reached 2,719, and about 4,521 have been injured, while more than 400 people are missing, according to a statement by the ruling military junta, China Central Television (CCTV) reported today.

Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing said the death toll could exceed 3,000.

The number of victims in Thailand is 20, while it is assumed that around 70 people are stuck under the rubble in Bangkok.
