Carnage: The dead are being counted; Civilians fled in panic
Today, Haitian gangs carried out a new attack on Port-Au-Prince, in which an unknown number of residents of a once peaceful neighborhood of the Haitian capital were killed.
The attack began before dawn, with civilians fleeing their homes in panic, some of them with babies or elderly people on their backs, according to eyewitnesses.
"Our country is suffering. They don't want us to survive," said 27-year-old Morisset Cedric Christian, who said that the Viv Ansanm gang alliance, which has claimed responsibility for other recent attacks, was responsible for the violence, reports AP.
Local media reported that two Haitian soldiers were among the victims, and police and military spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this morning's violence.
According to the United Nations, gang violence in the past month has left more than 6,000 people homeless in the greater Port-au-Prince area.
