Eight earthquakes in one hour; Seismologists warn: This is just the beginning, people fled
Earthquake after earthquake in Greece. Experts fear that it is a preparation for a devastating earthquake that is yet to follow. People are already running away in panic.
According to the data of the Greek portal pronews.gr, the last earthquake hit Amorgos at 09.06 local time, with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale, although it was initially measured as 4.1. It was also felt in Santorini.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and at a distance of 24 km southwest of Amorgos.
What is particularly worrying is that seismologists believe these are foreshocks.
Of particular concern is the fact that eight earthquakes occurred on Monday morning from 7 to 8 a.m.
Their strengths were: 3.9 degrees, then 4.2, then 4.2, then 2.0, then 3.7, 3.6, 3.7 and finally 4.1.
"The Santorini earthquakes are 'pre-earthquakes,'" said Dimitris Papanikolaou, professor of seismology, among others, speaking Monday morning on ANT1.
In fact, he stressed that seismic vibrations will reach an earthquake "at worst up to 6 degrees on the Richter scale".
He also pointed out that the seismic activity will last from several weeks to several months, which means that it is not excluded that this situation will last until the summer.
"Seismic activity around Santorini and Amorgos is in full swing," said seismology doctor Gerasimos Papadopoulos.
According to him, the last 48 hours have been difficult for the local population who are very worried. A decision was also made on the urgent undertaking of anti-seismic protection measures.
Papadopoulos added that the bad news is that seismic activity is in full swing, stating that all options are now open.
The seismic sequence has all the characteristics of foreshocks: an increase in the number of earthquakes, their size and the gradual displacement of their epicenters, which means that the activated fault is spreading".
At the same time, seismologists believe that this seismic activity on the island is not related to the volcano, whose eruption forced many people to leave this popular resort.
"This entire seismic sequence has the characteristics of tectonic earthquakes related to active faults in the area. They do not have the characteristics of volcanic earthquakes," Papadopoulos said.
