The disqualification occurred with Djokovic leading 7–5, 5–3 (15–15) and serving for the match.

Djokovic reached the 146th final of his career, moving level with Ivan Lendl in third place on the all-time list, behind only Jimmy Connors (164) and Roger Federer (157).

He also improved his record in Beijing to 33–0, making him the player with the best unbeaten start to a tournament in tennis history.

In addition, at 39 years and four months old, Djokovic became the oldest player ever to reach the final of an ATP 500 tournament, surpassing Federer, who reached the Basel final in 2019 at the age of 38.

That this was going to be a wild match was evident from the very first game, which lasted nine minutes and was eventually won by Djokovic — just barely.

Medvedev made the better start, and it did not even bother him that Djokovic was landing almost every first serve, as that advantage did not really show on the court.

The Russian was rewarded for his strong play with a break at 2–2, after a dramatic and lengthy marathon game — just one of many in the first set and throughout the match.

Another marathon game followed immediately, with Djokovic breaking back to level the score at 3–3... after 43 minutes of tennis!

The gladiatorial battle continued until the end of the first set, with more drama along the way. At 4–4, Medvedev failed to convert a break point, and at 5–5 Djokovic returned the favor.

However, at 6–5, the greatest of all time stepped up, earning three set points at 0–40. On the second, Daniil sent a passing shot into the net, bringing the first set — which lasted a remarkable one hour and 19 minutes — to an end.

The second set began with an easy service game for Novak, raising hopes that we might see a change in momentum, but alas... the drama resumed immediately.

Djokovic failed to convert a break point in the second game, but then saved six break points in the third. He went on to save several more in the fifth game, taking his total to an extraordinary 15 out of 16 break points saved.

The drama continued. Djokovic broke for 4–2, while Medvedev requested a medical timeout between games because of a shoulder problem, only to immediately break back.

And then he lost serve again!

In the final game, the Serbian star lost the first point, then won the second and... Well, you saw what happened and why Medvedev was disqualified, so there is no need to dwell on it.

All in all, Djokovic is through to the Beijing final, where he will be chasing his seventh title, 34th consecutive victory and first trophy of 2026. He will face Alex de Minaur on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
