Painful end at the European Championships – No medal for Ivana Španović!

Ivana Španović failed to win a medal in the triple jump final at the European Championships in Birmingham, finishing in eighth place. The Serbian athlete’s best jump was 14.06 meters.

The final did not start according to the original schedule, with traffic congestion significantly delaying the athletes’ arrival at the stadium. Španović and several other competitors encountered problems due to traffic accidents on the way, further reducing the time available for preparation.

Her coach, Goran Obradović, also confirmed the situation, and the start of the final was moved from 8:40 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

The travel problems and lack of adequate warm-up clearly affected the competitors. As many as six athletes fouled on their first attempts, including Španović.

The Serbian representative managed to produce a valid jump in the second round, reaching 14.06 meters. That proved to be her best effort of the final and ultimately earned her eighth place.

Španović then had to wait for the outcome of the third round, as her 13.95-meter jump put her at risk of missing out on the final three attempts. However, the mark was enough for her to continue in the competition.

She recorded another valid jump in the fourth round, but failed to surpass her best mark, reaching 14.04 meters. Her fifth attempt was again ruled a foul.

In the final round, Španović recorded 13.55 meters, bringing her final to an end.

It remains disappointing that the Serbian athlete was unable to perform at the level of her best results. Španović has reached 14.41 meters this season, significantly farther than her result in the Birmingham final.

European gold went to Italy’s Derkach, who claimed the title with a 14.60-meter jump, also the best mark in Europe this year. Belgium’s Giese won silver with 14.46 meters, while bronze went to Bulgaria’s Nacheva, who jumped 14.40 meters.
