Norwegians sue FIFA over Trump's interference

The Norwegian Football Association is prepared to file an official complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee over alleged political interference by U.S. President Donald Trump in the case of U.S. national team striker Folarin Balogun.

The president of the Norwegian Football Association, Lise Klaveness, warned that attempts to "sweep the entire case under the rug" are unacceptable and that such a precedent could seriously threaten football.

The case attracted significant attention after FIFA suspended the punishment imposed on U.S. striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup.

Shortly afterward, Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he had spoken with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and requested a review of the decision.

Now the entire case could take on a new dimension.

"This threatens the foundations of the game."

 

Lise Klaveness told the British newspaper The Times that the Norwegian Football Association will raise the issue with FIFA.

"When you break a rule in this way, you enter a slippery slope that puts the entire game at risk. It is worrying for football when the fundamental rules of the sport are undermined," Klaveness said.

The president of the Norwegian Football Association believes the decision was not made through a proper process.

"First and foremost, this should never have happened. Now it is crucial that there is honest communication about everything. We all know that external forces influenced this decision and that the process was not appropriate. FIFA needs to acknowledge that a mistake was made."

"If you adapt to politicians, you move the boundaries."

Klaveness particularly warned about the danger of state politics interfering in the work of football institutions.

"If you start adapting decisions to heads of state and government policy, you change the behavior of your organization. At the same time, you are moving the boundaries of what national leaders can do and what they can interfere in. That is exactly what has happened," she said.

She added that the issue is not just about one decision, but about the principle by which future decisions are made.

"When you make controversial decisions, especially if there has been significant external influence involved, it is important that more people are involved in the process. If that does not happen, it is a mistake."

"Too many people believe that football is under threat"

 

The president of the Norwegian Football Association stressed that the case must be openly examined.

"This case was so serious and concerning that I hope it will encourage people to speak up and not be afraid to point out problems."

"I will raise this issue at the board meeting and discuss it with my colleagues. After that, we will take certain steps. For me, this falls into the category of an ethics complaint."

Klaveness believes that an attempt to make the case disappear will not succeed.

"An attempt to cover this up now will not work. Too many people — coaches, players, and fans — believe that this has gone too far and that it has touched the very foundations of football."
