Lille managed to advance to the Europa League Round of 16 after extra time, winning 2-0 at the “Marakana,” with an aggregate score of 2-1.

The Red Stars had a poor start to the match, as Olivier Giroud converted almost the first chance for the visitors, beating Matheus and giving his team a 1-0 lead.

There was intense fighting until the end of regular time. Red Star had several chances to equalize and secure a place in the Europa League Round of 16, but they could not capitalize.

The final blow for the Red and Whites came in the first period of extra time, when Lille crowned a good counterattack with a goal from Jonathan Bamba (Nathan Ngoy) for the final 2-0.

Red Star had a chance in the second minute of the match; Jay Enem tried a shot, but Lille’s goalkeeper saved it.

Just two minutes later, Lille managed to score and take the lead – 1-0. Olivier Giroud timed Andrea’s cross perfectly and headed the ball into the net.

The French team looked better in the first half, creating several more chances, but Matheus came out on top on multiple occasions.

Red Star also tried to attack, but their shots were usually blocked by Lille’s defenders.

The play oscillated in the first half, but Red Star did not look nearly as good as they did in France; Lille controlled the game in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Red Stars looked much better, attacking from the start. Chances kept coming, and Vasilije Kostov had a good opportunity in the 47th minute, but he was blocked by Arnautović.

Red Star’s teenager also played very well in the second half, creating another good chance in the 58th minute, but the score remained unchanged.

Red Star tried to settle things before the 90 minutes were up. Duarte had a chance in the 77th minute, and Seol two minutes later, but the result did not change.

In the end, the match went into extra time.

There were not many chances in extra time, especially in the first period, but Lille capitalized on the only real opportunity. After a counterattack, Jonathan Bamba (Nathan Ngoy) joined from the right flank and, assisted by Félix Correia, scored for 2-0 in the 99th minute of the match.

In the second period of extra time, Red Star tried to come back from the knockdown. The Red Stars had several good chances, but they failed to beat Lille’s goalkeeper.

With a 2-0 victory and an aggregate score of 2-1, Lille managed to advance to the Europa League Round of 16, while the Red Stars were eliminated.
