Police had previously been conducting searches at Alta Bank's premises for more than 30 hours, beginning on Saturday, after the Executive Board of the National Bank of Serbia revoked the bank's operating licence early Saturday morning and bankruptcy proceedings were initiated.

Statement from the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office

Acting on the orders of the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office, and in cooperation with officers from the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP), the Service for Combating Organized Crime (SBPOK) and the Department for Combating Organized Financial Crime, three individuals were arrested today: the responsible official of Alta Bank a.d. Belgrade, D.M.; the director of the bank's Treasury and Cash Management Department, G.M.; and an associate in the bank's treasury operations, I.P.

On October 31 and November 1, 2026, searches were conducted at Alta Bank's premises and at the residence of suspect D.M., acting on orders from the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office. During the search of the bank's premises, an inventory of the cash held in its vault was carried out.

There are grounds to suspect that D.M. committed the criminal offence of abuse of position by a responsible person, under Article 227, paragraph 3, in conjunction with paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code, while the other suspects are accused of assisting in the commission of the offence.

There are grounds to suspect that, prior to October 31, 2026, suspect D.M. committed the aforementioned criminal offence by exceeding the limits of his authority, with suspects G.M. and I.P. assisting him by creating the conditions for the offence to be carried out.

As individuals responsible for the direct handling of assets in Alta Bank's vault, G.M. and I.P. allegedly handed him access cards or used their own cards and presence to enable unauthorized entries into the bank's "Depo" vault. During these entries, D.M. allegedly removed money from the vault, thereby obtaining unlawful financial gain amounting to approximately 45 billion dinars.

The suspects have been placed in police custody for a period of 48 hours.

They will be questioned by the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office in the coming days.

The Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office said it would keep the public informed of all measures and activities undertaken in the case.

MIA also issues statement

The responsible official of Alta Bank a.d. Belgrade, D.M. (44), was arrested today on suspicion of abuse of position by a responsible person. Two other individuals were also arrested on suspicion of assisting in the commission of the offence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) announced.

According to the statement, acting on orders from the Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office, officers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including the Criminal Police Directorate (UKP), the Service for Combating Organized Crime (SBPOK) and the Department for Combating Organized Financial Crime, arrested D.M. (44), the responsible official of Alta Bank a.d. Belgrade; G.M. (39), director of the bank's Treasury and Cash Management Department; and I.P. (43), an associate in the bank's treasury operations.
