The highest number of cases has been reported in Zagreb and Zagreb County, with five in total. Two cases have been recorded in Krapina-Zagorje County and two in Osijek-Baranja County, while one case has been reported in Koprivnica-Križevci County, according to Croatian broadcaster RTL.

The number of reported infections has increased in recent days. On August 27, the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) announced that there were six confirmed cases at the time, three of whom had been hospitalized.

The infection is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and is not spread through ordinary contact with an infected person. Mosquito activity is at its highest during the summer and early autumn.

It is worth noting that West Nile virus is causing increasing concern across European countries, with the number of infections rising day by day. Cases and fatalities have also been recorded in countries that are among the favorite destinations for Serbian tourists.

How can you protect yourself against West Nile virus?

To reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, the “Batut” Institute recommends personal protection measures against mosquito bites, such as using insect repellents on exposed areas of the body when outdoors, as well as wearing light-colored clothing with long sleeves and long trousers.

It is advisable to wear loose-fitting clothing, as mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting garments, and to avoid spending time outdoors during periods of peak mosquito activity, at dusk and dawn.

The use of mosquito screens on windows and doors, as well as around beds, is also recommended. Whenever possible, people should stay in air-conditioned spaces, where the number of insects is significantly reduced.

The “Batut” Institute recommends avoiding areas with large numbers of insects, such as forests and wetlands. It also notes that reducing the number of mosquitoes outdoors can be achieved by removing standing water, particularly from items such as flower pots, pet bowls and similar containers.

When traveling abroad, especially to tropical and subtropical regions, it is important to follow preventive measures. In the event of any symptoms compatible with the neuroinvasive form of the disease, the “Batut” Institute advises seeking medical attention from your doctor immediately.
