Opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Cedomir Jovanovic met on Tuesday in Belgrade with OSCE mission chief in Serbia Hans Ola Urstad. According to a Tanjug report, they agreed that it is necessary to improve the Law on Public Information with amendments, i.e. regulations that refer to the ban on media releases and transfer of founder rights. LDP, OSCE: Improve media law with amendments The LDP underscored in a statement that the amendments to those regulations are the party's precondition for possible support to the proposed act. The voting in parliament has been scheduled for August 31, after the ruling coalition failed last months to come up with a majority to pass the bill. “OSCE mission has supported all efforts to improve the Public Information Law via additional consultations and work, which is the precondition of the LDP for the possible support to the redefined law,” the statement said. The key changes, as this party put it, refer to the provisions on the ban on media releases in case the account is in the red for three months and prohibition on the transfer of founder rights. The LDP believes that those rules may significantly influence the freedom of media, adding that the OSCE mission shares the same stand. Jovanovic and Urstad agreed that that the preparation and proposal of the amendments to the Law on Public Information was realized in a wrong and non-transparent manner, without a public debate and discussions with journalists associations and experts.
