Top seed Novak Djokovic won his first ATP clay contest of the season on Wednesday, reports said. The Serb returned to the outdoor dirt for a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Frenchman Florent Serra at the Monte Carlo Masters. Djokovic starts ATP clay season with win While he claimed two ties on indoor clay a month ago in Serbia's defeat of the U.S. in Davis Cup, world number two Djokovic has not played on classic outdoors since his French Open loss in the 2009 third round to German Philipp Kohlschreiber. The Serb led more seeds on the day as the top eight began after opening-round byes at the seaside Country Club overlooking the Mediterranean. Two more members of the elite were due swing into action, with five-time winner and second seed Rafael Nadal starting against Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker. The Spaniard is bidding for an unprecedented sixth consecutive title at the event but has not lifted a trophy since winning in Rome 11 months ago. Third seed Andy Murray will try and shake off the funk which has enveloped his game in recent months since losing the Australian Open final to Roger Federer. The Scot begins his Monte Carlo campaign against Kohlschreiber. Djokovic was untroubled in the opening set against the 67th-ranked Serra, a first-round loser at the last two editions in the principality. The Serb took a 4-0 lead but had to struggle in the second set, requiring a late break to take the win in less than an hour and a half. Djokovic, whose only title of the season came in Dubai, improved to 16-4 on the season after losing the Monte Carlo final a year ago to Nadal. He next plays Swiss 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-1, 6-4. Ninth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, the champion in 2002 and 2003, eliminated German Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4, following up two clay titles and a final - all in the month of February in the Americas. Two more Spanish seeds followed on as number 11 David Ferrer beat Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-2 and number 12 Tommy Robredo put out Serb Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-3
