Zemun gangsters collectively locked up for half a millennium and the sale of NIS are featuring in today's dailies' front pages. ALO—"Children at the mercy of pedophiles" is a front page article that investigates the abuse of children. Press: Zemun verdicts, NIS sale "465 years of jail time and EUR 12mn in fines", reports about the verdicts in the Zemun Clan trial, delivered yesterday by the Special Organized Crime court. BLIC—Under the headline, "DS and G17 Plus also back NIS sale to Russians", the paper reports that the missing pieces in the sale of Serbia's oil monopoly to the Russian oil and gas giant might be falling into place. "NO visas as early as late 2008", says another headline, announcing the start of negotiations that could place holders of Serbian passports on the EU's so-called White Schengen list. "Zemun [Clan] members get 465 years in jail and EUR 11.6mn damages", the daily specifies the sum, as it reports about the verdicts handed to Serbia's most notorious gang, where damages would be paid to their victims. The news of former world chess champion Bobby Fischer's death are reported under, "Genius, eccentric and loner". BORBA—"Where will South Stream run", wonders the newspaper on the front page, in another piece about the energy sector cooperation between Belgrade and Moscow. "To Europe without visas", says another headline. VECERNJE NOVOSTI—"South Stream gains momentum", another article on the sale on NIS, where the construction of the pipeline through Serbia is still only a possibility. Meanwhile, the president of Serbia's Constitutional Court, Bosa Nenadic, is interviewed by the paper: "We will act above politics". "They will do time for five centuries" is about the Zemun Clan trial, and in particular Milorad Ulemek, a.k.a. Legija's fresh 40-year sentence, his third so far. A possibility that Serbian citizens could travel without suffering through the visa-acquiring process first also earned a spot in the front page: "White Schengen getting closer". GAZETA—"465 years for Zemun members" is about the Special Court's verdict. The daily also brings a rather curious piece about the absent leader of the Radicals, Vojislav Seselj, who is in Hague as his deputy battles for Serbia's presidency: "Lost virginity at 16, was madly in love with a Muslim girl." GLAS JAVNOSTI—"Legija gets 40, Zemun gang 465 years", the paper specifies. "Russia wants continued negotiations", finally, Kosovo makes it to the front page of one Belgrade daily today. Not only this, but another report suggests, "Martti Ahtisaari offered Republic of Srpska to Serbia", allegedly as one attempt to strike a deal over Kosovo. DANAS—"Goal to travel without visas by the end of the year", the liberal daily informs on the front page, as the EC decided to on Jan. 30 start technical negotiations on abolishment of visas. "Ulemek sentenced to another 40 years", is another headline. Serbia boss Miroslav Djukic promises, "I will leave if I don't take Serbia to the World Cup." KURIR—The tabloid focuses at the financial side of the Zemun Clan verdicts: "They must return EUR 12mn". The millions that now "must be returned" are in fact ransom money from the kidnappings the gang organized over the years. Formerly Bosniak, now Serbian film director, Emir Kusturica, says in an interview, "I am not a Chetnik". POLITIKA—"Nicholas Burns resigns", the paper reports about the stepping down of the man it describes as "the number three" in the U.S. State Department hierarchy. "With Russian gas to Brussels" is about a possible compromise within the ruling coalition. "Merrill Lynch and 'man from the shadow' competition to Miskovic", the daily says, and speculates that the construction of a regional shopping center at Usce in Belgrade might shake the dominant Delta Holding and its grip on the retail market. PRESS—More on the Zemun Clan verdicts in, "Zemun members get 465 years in prison". Former Red Star president and former Serbian football star Dragan Stojkovic Piksi is allegedly in trouble: "Piksi in the crosshairs of mafia".
