Sweden's government will not be deciding whether Julian Assange should be extradited to the United States, says the country's prime minister. Fredrik Reinfeldt explained that should the founder of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks be extradited to Sweden from the UK, it will be Swedish courts that would decide on a possible extradition request from Washington. "Swedish govt. won't decide on Assange" Reinfeldt was in London when he noted that "Sweden's policy", however, was not to extradite suspects to those countries that have death penalty, the AP reported. Assange is currently in Britain, where he is free on strict bail conditions, and set to fight against Sweden's efforts to have him extradited. He is wanted in Sweden for questioning after he was accused of committing sex crimes in that country. The Australian, however, has not been charged. The United States has also failed to indict Assange to date, and it is unclear if Washington will be able to do so. There, he and his website have caused "anger" by publishing a large number of leaked confidential U.S. diplomatic cables. Assange and his supporters believe that if extradited to Sweden, he could face extradition to the U.S., where he could face death penalty on espionage charges.
