The Party of United Pensioners (PUPS) has requested that the month of February be declared Month of Protection of the Cyrillic Alphabet. February is also the month when Serbia celebrates her Statehood Day. Protection and promotion of Cyrillic script urged PUPS deputy leader Milan Krkobabic called on the state institutions in a written statement to adopt incentives for advertisers and media outlets to use Serbian Cyrillic instead of Latin. "My proposal is for every commercial published in Cyrillic to be given at least a five percent discount on the price, and I am calling on the state to adopt appropriate measures for the advertising sector, fo stimulative tax rates for all those who advertise in Cyrillic," said Krkobabic. This party official noted that state-run companies, such as Telekom Srbia and Lutrija Srbije (Serbian Lottery) should lead by example, instead of for years using the Latin alphabet in their commercials. "The PUPS is publicly taking the obligation to do everything to prevent a further decline and marginalization of the Cyrillic script, which is one of the most important symbols of out national identity," the statement concluded. The official alphabet of the Serbian language is Cyrillic, while a variant of the Latin script is also in use in the country. (Wikipedia) Beta
