Latvian leader visits Serbia

President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers is on an official visit to Serbia this Tuesday, and has met with Serbian President Boris Tadic The two stated in Belgrade today that the two countries can considerably improve their bilateral relations, mainly in the area of economy, and share the EU experience particularly regarding the obstacles they encounter on the EU path. Latvian leader visits Serbia Zatlers said at a joint press conference that Latvia will offer full and sincere support to Serbia's EU path. He said that the Latvian parliament will soon ratify the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between Serbia and EU. "We believe that the entire Balkan region should join EU and in future, be part of a new Europe. That is important for stability and sustainable development of the region. We will offer Serbia all the assistance it needs and exchange experience with the country particularly in view of the difficulties on the EU path," Zatlers stated after the meeting with Tadic. At the beginning of the first official visit of a Latvian president to Belgrade, Tadic and Zatlers stated that the economic cooperation should have priority in the process of fostering bilateral relations. Tadic stated that the Baltic states and the Balkans are faced with huge economic challenges which are a consequence of the global crisis, adding that they could help each other by sharing experience. "I have presented Serbia's path and manner of fight against the crisis, although the crisis dramatically hit the entire European continent and the world. I believe that in future, we will have to create mechanisms which will lead to a safer economy," said he. Tadic and Zatlers in Belgrade today (Tanjug)
