Parliament is to debate a draft law on an Anti-Corruption Agency and amendments to the Law on Political Parties’ Funding. Under the proposals, the Agency would oversee funding of political parties and election campaigns. Anti-corruption laws entering procedure The government has proposed to parliament that it adopt these laws as soon as possible, as the creation of an Anti-Corruption Agency is one of the conditions for further EU integration. The Agency’s most important responsibilities would be solving conflicts of interest, keeping a record of state officials and their property, control of political parties’ sources of financing, and international anti-corruption cooperation. The Agency would have a director and a board of nine members elected by parliament. The Agency director, who will be selected in a public competition called by the Agency Committee, cannot be a member of a political party, and is subject to the same commitments and restrictions as state officials, as prescribed by the Agency Law. The law will come into force on the eighth day after its adoption, and upon its entry into force the Law on Preventing Conflicts of Interest will cease to be valid.
