Spain set to extradite Zemun gang member to Serbia

Vladimir Milisavljević, member of the Zemun criminal gang, will be extradited to Serbia, the Spanish government has decided.

BELGRADE Vladimir Milisavljevic, member of the Zemun criminal gang, will be extradited to Serbia, the Spanish government has decided. In Serbia, Milisavljevic has been sentenced in absentia to 35 years in prison for the part he played in the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and to another 40 years in prison for other crimes committed by the Zemun gang. The Spanish Council of Ministers decided upon the proposal of Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon to continue with the extradition procedure, the daily said. Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said that the Spanish executives agreed to continue with Milisavljevic's extradition considering the fact that he is charged with participation in a criminal organization, murders and kidnaps. On January 2, Spain's National Court said that the conditions for Milisavljevic's extradition to Serbia have been fulfilled. After the extradition, Milisavljevic will have the right to call for a retrial for the murder of Zoran Djindjic and the crimes committed by the Zemun gang - killing of Branko Jeftovic, Dejan Zivancevic, and Milutin Jovicic in 2004. Milisavljevic was arrested in a police action in Valencia in February 2012 along with Luka Bojovic, whose is charged by the Serbian Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office for Djindjic's assassination and murder of Zemun gang leaders, after which he took over the control over the gang members while on the run, and took part in a number of murders in order to protect them. In Spain, Milisavljevic is charged with participation in the murder of Zemun gang member Milan Jurisic in 2006. The Spanish police found human remains in the Manzanares River in March 2012, which are thought to belong to Jurisic, but the results of the forensic analysis have not been disclosed to date. His extradition to Serbia could take place soon after this decision, given that now all conditions for his extradition have been fulfilled, the Belgrade-based daily Danas is reporting.
