Arthur Keys, President and CEO of International Relief and Development, said that Serbia’s greatest challenge in the coming period will be to preserve jobs. He told Voice of America that Serbia must enable citizens to take out loans for their own businesses. Serbia “should save jobs” The IRD is a non-governmental organization which has funds of half a billion dollars every year for helping countries all around the world, Serbia included. “At this moment, there is much emphasis being put on maintaining the existing and opening new jobs. I am afraid that the people who are found in an already bad position, such as the refugees and displaced persons, will pay the highest price for the world economic crisis, who have just gotten their footing in Serbia and are now hit by this crisis,” Keys was quoted as saying. He added that the main thing that can be done to help struggling businesses in Serbia is to assist those who are competitive to improve, so they can service both the domestic and foreign markets, especially the European market. Keys explained that the long-term plans of the NGO concentrate on economy and helping in the democratic administration of society. “A large number of people are working in politics and they want to gain the experience and knowledge of how to become a part of the democratic process, not just to vote, but to be politically active. But, the main thing is to help people get the capital, loans, in order for them to expand their business activities and to employ as many people as possible,” he said.
