People in coastal areas have been told to move immediately to higher ground, even abandoning their vehicles and running if necessary to avoid becoming trapped in traffic.The powerful earthquake was detected around 38 kilometres north of Te Anau, near Fiordland National Park. The warning is in effect for the west coast of the South Island, from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point, according to the country&rsquo;s emergency management agency.The National Emergency Management Agency issued the following warning:&ldquo;Land inundation is likely in the following areas. People near the coast in these areas must immediately move to the nearest high ground, outside tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible. The earthquake may not have been felt in some of these areas, but evacuation should be urgent as a destructive tsunami is possible.Listen to local civil defence authorities and follow all instructions regarding evacuation in your area. If you are told to evacuate, do not stay at home. Do not return until Civil Defence has issued an official all-clear message.Walk, run or cycle if at all possible to reduce the chance of becoming trapped in traffic congestion. People outside the immediate evacuation zones should move to the nearest high ground or as far inland as possible if they felt a long or strong earthquake that made it difficult to stand.&rdquo; the agency said.
