Europe is set to face a rare weather shift. A strong omega block over the North Atlantic and Greenland is directing a mass of Arctic cold air deep into the eastern and southeastern parts of the continent. This unusual late-spring cold intrusion threatens significant frost and snowfall.After an unusually warm start to spring, with temperatures in many parts of Europe reaching 20&ndash;25&deg;C, a sharp drop is now expected. Temperatures will fall 8&ndash;15&deg;C below average for late April and early May. The strongest impact is expected in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, the Balkans, and Turkey. According to forecasts, morning frosts of -2&deg;C to -5&deg;C, and locally even lower, are possible, Severe Weather Europe reports.In northern regions (northwestern Russia, Estonia, Finland, Norway), heavy snowfall is expected, locally reaching 30&ndash;50 cm. By next weekend, the cold will spread to the Balkans and Turkey, where snow is forecast in Ankara and central Anatolia, with accumulations potentially exceeding 30 cm. While eastern and southeastern Europe are hit by cold air, western parts of the continent (including Western Europe and the southwestern Mediterranean) will remain under the influence of a warm ridge with above-average temperatures. This dipole pattern will create a sharp temperature contrast across Europe.The main cause is an omega block&mdash;a high-pressure system shaped like the Greek letter &ldquo;&Omega;&rdquo; over Greenland, which is blocking the usual westerly flow and acting as a &ldquo;conveyor belt&rdquo; for Arctic air. This has been further influenced by disruptions in the stratosphere, a weakening of the polar vortex, and a transition toward La Ni&ntilde;a conditions in the Pacific. Farmers are advised to take protective measures, such as spraying or covering crops.Although the omega block is still active, it is expected to weaken over the coming week, but the cold will remain over eastern Europe at least until the beginning of May.
