“Dangerous weather phenomena are forecast, with an intensity that may cause material damage and pose a risk to people and animals. It is necessary to be extremely cautious, aware of the risks, and regularly informed about the details of the expected weather conditions. Follow the advice issued by the competent state authorities,” the RHMZ website states. The beginning of a prolonged heatwave in the territory of the Republic of Serbia will be marked by maximum temperatures of 33 to 37°C today (July 30), while from Friday (July 31) temperatures will range from 35 to 38°C, locally reaching up to 40°C.Printscreen/RHMZAccording to the latest forecasts, the heatwave will persist throughout the entire first ten days of August, with the most intense period expected from August 5 to August 8, when maximum daytime temperatures of around 40°C are forecast in most areas.Tropical nights are also expected in urban areas, with minimum temperatures ranging from 20°C to 24°C, while in Belgrade they are expected to be between 22°C and 26°C.At the end of the first ten days of August, the likelihood of local showers and thunderstorms will increase, but without any significant cooling. Although the intensity of the heat will gradually weaken, maximum daytime temperatures will still range from 30°C to 35°C in most areas.Hydrological warning and heat stress warning issuedThe RHMZ has also issued a hydrological warning, according to which water levels on the Danube, Sava, and the Tisa River near Titel are expected to remain below low navigation levels in the coming days.  Printscreen/RHMZAccording to the RHMZ warning, a prolonged period of extremely high temperatures is leading to the accumulation of heat stress and a significant increase in health risks for the population. The greatest risks are related to heatstroke, sunstroke, and dehydration, with the most vulnerable groups being particularly at risk — children, elderly people, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, as well as people who work or spend time outdoors. It is recommended to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., when air temperatures and UV radiation are at their highest, while ensuring regular fluid intake and staying in cooled indoor spaces whenever possible. In densely built urban areas, especially in traffic congestion zones and areas with intense heating of asphalt, concrete, and other artificial surfaces, the heat load will be further intensified, increasing the risk of overheating and worsening health conditions among vulnerable groups.  A prolonged period of high temperatures, combined with the drying out of vegetation and soil, significantly increases the risk of wildfires breaking out and spreading rapidly in open areas. Forest areas, agricultural land, low vegetation, and neglected land are particularly vulnerable.Under such conditions, fires can spread quickly even with light winds, further complicating efforts to contain and extinguish them.Printscreen/RHMZA prolonged heatwave places significant strain on the power grid due to increased electricity consumption for cooling, while demand for water supplies is also rising at the same time.High temperatures can cause road asphalt to soften and deform, increase the risk of engine overheating and tire blowouts, and raise the likelihood of traffic accidents due to reduced concentration among road users. In railway transport, the risk of rail deformation (thermal expansion) increases due to the extreme heating of steel tracks. At the same time, significant heat stress is expected in agriculture and livestock farming, with adverse effects on crop production, animal health, and productivity.
