Speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity ahead of the NATO ministerial meeting, the official said that although the Alliance is aware of Putin’s recent statements, it does not interpret them as a sign of genuine intent, European Pravda reports.“Putin may say he is ready for war. But when Putin says something, it often does not turn out to be true. And in any case, I do not believe Vladimir Putin is ready for a war with Europe,” the official said. The NATO representative acknowledged that Russia’s military capabilities remain significant, especially due to the experience it has gained in the war in Ukraine. However, in the Alliance’s view, that does not make Putin’s threats credible.“Capability for war, but not for victory”“He is not ready. But I am not saying that Russia is not producing enough military equipment, or that Russia lacks military capability or the economic base for such a campaign. And of course, this does not mean that Russia does not want to change the European security architecture,” the official explained.“The reason is that he knows NATO will defend itself — and even if he has the capability to wage a war, he does not have the capability to win. And most importantly, I believe Putin understands that NATO is now incredibly united in defending its allies,” the senior official concluded. It was earlier reported that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that the Alliance would take part in discussions on elements of a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia that pertain to NATO.
