The strategy notes that, despite the constitutionally guaranteed permanent neutrality, Moldova will strengthen cooperation in this area with NATO and EU countries and increase military expenditures.All opposition parties criticized the multimillion-dollar defense expenditures during the economic crisis. The policy has raised concerns among authorities in the autonomous region of Gagauzia and unrecognized Transnistria, where they are worried about increasing NATO drills near the security zone guarded by Russian forces.The increasingly frequent appearance of foreign soldiers on the city streets is also causing concern in Moldovan society, according to Sputnik.Russia's foreign intelligence service has not ruled out the possibility of introducing armed forces from EU or NATO countries into Moldova in order to keep this country from adhering to its Russophobic policy. The service explained that provocations against Transnistria or Russian peacekeepers on the Dniester could also be used to initiate the deployment of troops.
