Two men charged over alleged terrorist attack at British military base

Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim (24) has been charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service, which police suspect is Iranian, while Numan Esgir (24) has been charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the United Kingdom, the BBC reported.

Esgir, a British national from Westminster, was charged on Tuesday under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023 over suspected activity dating back to August 22, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of the Counter Terrorism Policing unit, said.

Both men are due to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Three suspicious vans were spotted near the US-operated base on September 27.

Police found petrol in the vehicles and established a large security cordon around the base for several days.

Esgir was first arrested near the base on September 27 and was arrested again on October 20.

Another man, a 25-year-old British-Iranian national who was rearrested last week, was released without charge but remains on bail following his initial arrest earlier this month.

A total of eight men have been arrested as part of the investigation, including five near the base in September.

The five men were initially arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosive Substances Act and were subsequently suspected of preparing a terrorist act.

Six men remain on bail.
