Russia suffers 50,000 casualties in Ukraine
Russia suffered more than 50,000 military casualties, including killed and wounded, in Ukraine last month, Bloomberg reports, citing a NATO official.
According to the official, Ukrainian forces suffered around 5,000 casualties, including killed and wounded, over the same period. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information.
He said the Russian military is attempting to make advances along the front line by sending troops into areas exposed to drone attacks, artillery fire and mines, where Ukrainian forces have established defensive positions.
He added that Russia's heavy losses come as Ukraine steps up attacks on Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries and data processing centers, while Ukrainian forces have recaptured more than 125 square kilometers of territory in ground operations.
Martin Jäger, head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND), said last week that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been placed in a position by the course of the war so far in which ending the invasion without political consequences would be difficult.
U.S. President Donald Trump said today that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement on an "energy truce" that is expected to take effect immediately.
According to estimates, Russia's defense spending could reach nearly 17 trillion rubles, or approximately $199 billion, this year—around 40% higher than the original plan announced by the government in late 2025.
Moscow does not publish official figures on military casualties or recruitment, while estimates of the number of troops killed and wounded cannot be independently verified, the U.S. news agency reports.
