Nobel Committee makes announcement: Here is the Peace Prize Winner
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to South African judge and human rights commissioner Navanethem Pillay, Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes announced.
“The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to a person who, with exceptional courage and integrity, has paved the way toward a more comprehensive global legal order. This year’s laureate has played a key role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law,” Fridnes said.
Pillay served as a judge on South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Today, Navi Pillay is a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case in which Myanmar is accused of genocide.
“Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her strong moral compass have remained constant throughout her long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep-rooted structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion.”
“The common thread running through her career stretches from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who opposed apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the most significant international legal cases of our time,” Frydnes said.
It is worth recalling that last year’s laureate was María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize.
