"Horrific crash": School bus overturns; There are fatalities VIDEO
Two people, including a female student, were killed today and several others were injured when a school bus overturned in a multi-vehicle crash in central Florida, authorities said.
Around 40 passengers were on the school bus, which was traveling toward Winter Haven High School in the city of the same name, when it was struck by a car, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a press conference, according to the Associated Press.
“It was a horrific crash. And an incredibly tragic morning,” the sheriff added.
Shortly after 6 a.m. local time, a car traveling in the opposite direction struck the side of the bus near the rear wheels, causing one of the bus’s tires to blow out. The bus then collided with an oncoming Jeep, which caught fire, the sheriff explained.
One person in the Jeep was killed. Judd added that between five and seven people were taken to hospital with potentially traumatic injuries, while one person was in critical condition.
There were a total of 39 people on the bus, including 37 high school students, while the other two were the bus driver and his daughter.
