Drama in New York; Police on high alert; Emergency evacuation ordered VIDEO
Several buildings were evacuated in New York on Tuesday as police investigated a suspicious package near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan.
The incident took place just a few blocks from the United Nations headquarters, where the UN General Assembly is being held.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) closed East 42nd through East 44th Streets between Second and Lexington Avenues and urged people to avoid the area around East 43rd Street and Third Avenue due to road closures and possible traffic congestion, Fox News reported.
According to unconfirmed reports, the suspicious object may have been an unattended suitcase.
Police confirmed that buildings had been evacuated, but did not say how many buildings were affected.
After the operation was completed, the streets were reopened, while police officers declined to provide details about the suspicious package, including its location and contents.
The incident occurred during the UN General Assembly, which is being attended by numerous world leaders. U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday and held several bilateral meetings with foreign officials.
