Two "Titans" set to collide; First warnings issued — Is a freezing cold spell on the way?

Meteorologists are currently discussing a possible scenario involving the polar vortex, as Germany’s Bild reports that it could be linked to an exceptionally strong El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific.

Although most models currently indicate that the vortex remains stable and that no reliable forecast can yet be made, meteorologists have issued serious warnings about what could happen if the polar vortex breaks down.

Meteorologist Karsten Brandt says that, if such a scenario were to occur, cold air could push southward, potentially “freezing Europe in its tracks.”

For Europe, this would mean a significant cold spell, Blic reports.

If such a split were to occur, the weather pattern could change rapidly. Longer periods of frost, snow, and freezing air masses could once again become a problem, particularly during the second half of winter.

Even the possibility of a weather reversal in October is being described as “extremely uncertain.” As Heute reports, the scenario is meteorologically interesting, but there is still no concrete indication that it will happen. A clearer picture is expected only as forecast models begin to converge as the potential event approaches.

Formation of the Polar Vortex for next winter

As recently reported by Severe Weather Europe, a new polar vortex is now forming over the North Pole, with rapid stratospheric cooling and falling pressure already visible in the latest data. It is starting the season stronger than last year, but long-range forecasts show a very different signal for winter 2026/2027.

New seasonal trends point to a noticeable weakening of the polar vortex around midwinter, with weaker winds and rising pressure in the stratosphere.

A strong Super El Niño is also developing in the Pacific, which is another factor influencing the winter evolution of the polar vortex, according to Severe Weather Europe.

The polar vortex is a broad winter circulation of air over the polar regions. It consists of two layers: the stratospheric layer, which is higher, more symmetrical and more stable, and the tropospheric layer, which is lower and more irregular due to the influence of terrain and atmospheric pressure systems.

The latest data show that the cold core over the pole is strengthening, while pressure in the stratosphere is falling rapidly, indicating that a clearly defined new polar vortex is forming for the upcoming winter.

By late September, the vortex is expected to be somewhat stronger than usual for this time of year. Seasonal forecasts from ECMWF and UKMO indicate that the vortex could weaken significantly around midwinter, roughly from January 2027 onward, accompanied by weaker winds and rising pressure in the stratosphere.

This could signal a possible disruption or even what is known as “sudden stratospheric warming” (SSW), an event in which temperatures high in the stratosphere rise by dozens of degrees within a matter of days, disrupting the overall circulation and allowing cold air to “escape” toward lower latitudes, including the United States, Canada and Europe.
