Total disaster; More than 5,000 people have died from the heat

This was announced today by Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET.

Spain also experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius, 0.3 degrees above the previous record set in 2025, Reuters reported.

The heatwaves in July and August, which lasted for more than 20 days, were among the longest recorded since 1975.

AEMET said that all 10 of the hottest summers on record in Spain have occurred in the 21st century.

Data from the Ministry of Health’s monitoring system show that 5,234 people died from heat-related causes between May 15 and August 31.

Scientists say that extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent as a result of human-caused climate change.
