They were found during the night between Wednesday and Thursday and were reportedly in serious condition, Euronews reported.

Their wooden pirogue had departed from The Gambia carrying 315 people: 191 from Senegal, 123 from The Gambia and one from Mali.

“Among them were men, women and minors, including infants, who were in a difficult humanitarian situation,” the coast guard said. The migrants were rescued near the fishing port of Nouadhibou, Mauritania’s economic capital.

In recent months, hundreds of migrants, mostly from Senegal, the Gambia and Mali, have been rescued in Mauritanian waters while attempting to reach Europe. However, hundreds of others have died or gone missing after their boats sank, highlighting the deadly risks of the Atlantic migration route to the Canary Islands.
