It's confirmed: There are fatalities VIDEO
Several people have been killed after a shopping mall collapsed in the Japanese city of Kumamoto, Asahi TV reported, citing a police source, following a powerful earthquake that struck the interior of the island of Kyushu.
The Aeon Mall shopping center was partially destroyed by an explosion that occurred after the earthquake. The complex, which houses retail stores and entertainment facilities, had reopened only last month following renovations carried out after the deadly earthquake that struck the area ten years ago.
More than 40,000 households without power
More than 40,000 households were left without electricity after the earthquake that struck the interior of the island of Kyushu, according to the energy company Kyushu Electric.
Residents of the city of Hikawa, located about 25 kilometers south of Kumamoto, also reported disruptions to electricity and water supplies, NHK reported.
The city government building was also left without lighting and air conditioning after one of its two emergency power sources failed.
Around 300,000 people urged to evacuate
Around 300,000 people have been urged to move to evacuation centers as aftershocks continue on the Japanese island of Kyushu, according to Japan's disaster management agency.
Several hundred members of Japan's armed forces have also been deployed to the earthquake-affected area to assist with rescue operations and searches for survivors.
Different estimates of the earthquake's magnitude
The U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the earthquake that struck Kumamoto today had a magnitude of 6.8. Japan's Meteorological Agency continues to report a preliminary magnitude of 7.1.
