The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering military action in Mali against JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group, according to current and former U.S. officials familiar with the discussions.

If Trump approves the strikes, Mali would become the eighth country where he has ordered military action since the beginning of his second term, The Washington Post reported.

There is no consensus among senior U.S. officials over whether a strike should be launched.

One of the strongest advocates of the military option is Sebastian Gorka, the White House National Security Council’s senior director for counterterrorism. The Pentagon declined to comment on the matter.

JNIM expands attacks

JNIM, or Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, has strengthened its position in Mali in recent years and has begun expanding attacks toward coastal countries in West Africa.

The group is considered one of the best-armed militant organizations in the region and among the most powerful such groups in the world.

Mali, a country of nearly 25 million people, has for years been affected by violence from Islamist groups, as well as repression by its own military junta and Russian mercenaries hired by the authorities. Militants launched a fuel blockade last year that paralyzed large parts of the country, and this spring carried out coordinated attacks across Mali.

Americans also blame Russia

In recent years, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have, following military coups, cut many of their ties with the West and turned to Russia for security assistance. A Trump administration official responsible for Mali issues blamed not only local authorities but also Russia’s partners, arguing that Moscow has proven to be an ineffective security partner.

 

A possible U.S. military intervention also carries additional risks, as Russian forces are present in the region. This could require Washington and Moscow to reach agreements to avoid direct incidents, similar to the deconfliction mechanisms that existed in Syria.
