A powerful storm accompanied by hail hit the Ardèche region in southern France, causing material damage to vehicles, buildings, and vegetation.

The storm struck the area around the towns of Aubenas, Vals-les-Bains and Lalevade-d’Ardèche around midday. Videos shared on social media showed hailstones several centimetres in diameter covering the streets within a short period of time, Le Figaro reported.

According to reports from the scene, some hailstones were the size of tennis balls, measuring between five and seven centimetres in diameter.

The hail damaged numerous vehicles, including windshields, as well as several buildings.

Firefighters responded to multiple incidents caused by the severe weather, while heavy rainfall also led to localised flooding.

Aubenas Mayor Jean-Romain Riberi described the storm as an “extremely violent phenomenon” after parts of the region were left covered in a layer of ice and hail during the summer.

Ardèche was among the departments in France that had previously been placed under an orange alert due to the risk of severe storms.
