Total blackout; Entire country left without electricity
Cuba suffered another blackout in the National Electric Power System (SEN) on Tuesday, leaving the entire country without electricity, officials said.
This was the third such incident in less than two weeks, according to Euronews.
The state electricity workers’ union said that a problem with a generating unit in the eastern province of Holguín caused a "sudden frequency change", resulting in a power outage lasting several hours around midday local time.
Both the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Electricity Workers’ Union indicated that "restoration protocols had been activated", meaning that "micro-islands" were being established and then interconnected to provide power to priority locations such as hospitals and food processing facilities.
By the afternoon, electricity had been restored in some parts of the capital Havana, according to media reports, while authorities said that four percent of the city had regained power.
Some provinces, including Guantánamo and Cienfuegos, announced that they had begun distributing electricity to their hospitals, while Matanzas confirmed that power had been restored to the city’s historic center.
