This was the third such incident in less than two weeks, according to Euronews.

The state electricity workers’ union said that a problem with a generating unit in the eastern province of Holguín caused a "sudden frequency change", resulting in a power outage lasting several hours around midday local time.

Both the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Electricity Workers’ Union indicated that "restoration protocols had been activated", meaning that "micro-islands" were being established and then interconnected to provide power to priority locations such as hospitals and food processing facilities.

By the afternoon, electricity had been restored in some parts of the capital Havana, according to media reports, while authorities said that four percent of the city had regained power.

Some provinces, including Guantánamo and Cienfuegos, announced that they had begun distributing electricity to their hospitals, while Matanzas confirmed that power had been restored to the city’s historic center.

Last week, two nationwide blackouts left more than nine million Cubans without electricity, following two more outages in March, as well as several regional power failures.

The blackouts have had a significant impact on the population and, combined with the energy embargo, have led to restrictions on transportation, reduced working hours, and flight cancellations, in addition to serious consequences for public health.

Power outages have also disrupted water supplies, internet access, and telephone services.

Washington imposed an energy embargo on Cuba in January following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threatened tariffs on other countries that sell fuel to the island, further worsening the five-year crisis caused by previous sanctions.
