Call for brutal revenge? Germany fears a possible attack

Due to a call for revenge published in an Iranian daily newspaper, politicians from the Christian Democrats (CDU), Social Democrats (SPD), and the Greens have warned of the possibility of an attack in Germany.

“The terrorist regime has been planning and preparing targeted assassinations and terrorist attacks in the West, including in Germany, for some time,” CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter told Handelsblatt.

“The mullah regime is trying to stabilize itself through radical ideology and terror, both within the country and abroad,” Kiesewetter said.

The widely circulated Iranian daily newspaper Hamshahri published a graphic calling for retaliation against Western politicians, including German Chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz.

“The list of those who must await the revenge of the Iranian people,” read the headline.

“This is not just a newspaper story,” said Konstantin von Notz of the Greens.

“Such naming of individuals in an Iranian newspaper most likely does not happen without approval, or even direct orders, from the mullah regime,” von Notz said.

He described the death threats as a new level of escalation in relations with other countries.

However, the list itself does not currently represent an immediate new threat to the chancellor, who is already “extremely well protected,” von Notz said.

“The actions of Iran’s leadership have nevertheless represented a ‘very serious threat to our country, its institutions, Jewish women and men, and Israeli citizens, as well as to Israeli and American facilities in Germany’ for months,” the Green Party politician told Handelsblatt.

Sebastian Fiedler of the SPD also assessed the level of threat as high, saying that the latest developments further confirm that assessment.

According to Fiedler, the current situation could encourage extremists and “mobilize individual perpetrators.”
