As reported by CBS News, United States Southern Command said on social media that the vessel “was operated by an organization designated as terrorist,” was traveling along known drug-smuggling routes, and was involved in narcotics trafficking operations.

Alongside the statement, the command released a video showing the strike on the vessel, which split into two parts after the impact, with smoke rising from the wreckage.

The U.S. military has not released evidence proving that the targeted vessels were actually transporting narcotics.

A spokesperson for SOUTHCOM previously told CBS News that, for operational security reasons, the military could not discuss specific intelligence sources or the methods it uses.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump launched a campaign in early September targeting vessels it claims are involved in drug trafficking in Latin American waters, including the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

According to available data, at least 193 people have been killed in the campaign so far.

Trump previously stated that the United States is in an “armed conflict” with drug cartels in Latin America and argued that the strikes are necessary to stop the flow of drugs into the United States.

Critics of the American campaign, however, have questioned the legality of the attacks on vessels.

The first strike as part of the operation was carried out on September 2, and the U.S. administration came under heavy criticism in early December after confirming reports by The Washington Post that a second strike had been carried out on the same vessel during that initial attack.

According to American media reports, two survivors of the first strike were killed in the follow-up attack.

Some members of the U.S. Congress raised the question of whether such a subsequent strike could constitute a war crime.
