French police have killed an armed man who tried to set fire to a synagogue in the northwestern city of Rouen, the French interior minister said.

The man was armed with a knife, and when he moved towards the police, they shot him, according to the statement.

The mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, said that the attack on the synagogue does not affect only the Jewish community, but that the whole city is in shock.

"In Rouen, police officers neutralized an armed individual early this morning who apparently wanted to set fire to the city's synagogue," Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wrote.

He congratulated the policemen for their courage. According to unofficial information, the man was armed with a knife and an iron bar, reports Mond.
