An armed man opened fire at two locations in central Athens, injuring several people, while police are searching for the suspect and determining the motive behind the attack.

According to local media reports, the suspect is an 89-year-old man who is being sought by police, Sky News reports.

The attacker was armed with a shotgun and first opened fire inside a social security office in the city center, where he injured one employee.

Shortly afterward, the shooting continued on the ground floor of a courthouse building in Athens, where several people were injured, police said.

The motive for the attack is not yet known, but according to media reports, the attacker threw envelopes containing documents inside the courthouse, which he claimed explained his actions.

Footage from state television shows emergency services transporting at least three injured people to hospital.
